The Justice League: Snyder Cut

The Justice League in all of its Zack Snyder glory has now been unleashed upon the world. Given that it is such a new entity I will not cover the film’s plot as I am sure there are some who are yet to watch it and do not need me point out any specific differences between this and the original. Instead, I will just waffle on about some of my general thoughts.

So, it appears the Snyder Cut was both a success on the internet and within my little head. As someone who did not hate the Whedon Cut, I feel like I’ve had a revelation about what we were missing. Now, I would like to add that this new version of the film is almost certainly not the film Snyder would have originally made given the restraints of a theatrical release. I mean, it would never have been near four hours long at the cinema. But, it is and that’s a darn good thing.

Character wise, one of the biggest improvements on the WC is the character development of Cyborg (Ray Fisher), giving him much more involvement and backstory. I felt that Batman just did not seem quite as cheesy as in the original version. He felt serious, like a guy putting together a team to administer justice. I was also happy to see that Mr Snyder cut out what I found to be the most annoying piece of dialogue in the whole film, making Flash exponentially less annoying.

Possibly the greatest addition to this film is all the screen time that antagonist Steppinwolf gets. His developed is such that I felt sympathetic towards him at times. The whole narrative with the bad guys really is what keeps this four-hour film moving.

The best thing about the Snyder Cut for me really is the fact that we get to see the Justice League coming together and working in unison for a significant amount of time. There is enough dialogue and relationship building to evoke a bit of emotion towards our newly formed superhero team.

A New Challenger

My biggest problem with this film was always going to be that I feel this whole story has come much too early in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). But honestly, that will take an article with me re-writing the DCEU in my image. I really am wondering how it all fits in now and what actually is canon DCEU.

In conclusion, this long film is a brilliant superhero flick. It is up there some of my favourites, perhaps even a top 15. While I definitely prefered Wonder Woman, it certainly beats the other DCEU films that [kind of] came before it.
